Getting Ready!

Today I packed up my Mini Cooper like it was time for college and headed back to work to start setting up my classroom! We don't officially go back until the 18th, but that only gives me two days to get ready for kids, and we have a ton of PD during those days.

Open the gates! What a mess...

I wanted to make the room feel bigger this year, but with 30 desks, I knew it would be tricky!

I'm not totally sure that I like this desk layout yet, but it seems to be my old standby for the beginning of the year!

Still need to put up bulletin boards, hang posters, etc...

I ended up with an extra chair since I bought a new one, so I think I'll keep this one up year, because I honestly don't know what else to do with it. I sectioned off an area just for a reading corner, and the backside is the perfect place to store our laptop cart I think!

New desk, which takes up way less space, so I am happy!

I have all my Erin Condren stuff up, I just need to figure out a space to store binders and books, etc...

View of the reading area from my desk. I am so excited about this space, because it looks like a little lounge!

I also have to bring in my two large "poofs" that I made. They are enormous, so I have no idea where they will end up living!

Other side of the reading lounge, love my $10 rug from IKEA!

View from the "lounge" into the room. For some reason, I like to have a lot of open space at the front of the room, anyone else like that?

Well, it's a start, and I'm not as thrilled with it as I have been in years past. I love the reading area, but I am second guessing myself a lot this time around. What do your rooms look like? Post a link to your blog in the comments, I'd love to see!

    2. That's awesome. I'm trying to figure out if I can get a TARDIS door created (narrow spot where my door is. I have a planner I found that is Who related and I'm pretty excited about it. Use the good Doctor in a few lessons... :)

  4. Wow! I love everything about your room's set up! I think all teachers need to have their own little nook of the room and yours looks so cozy. The reading lounge is awesome. Your kids will love it! (Unfortunately my room is way too small to make an actual reading lounge, but I do have a reading corner.) And yeah, I definitely need to have my space at the front of the classroom. I never want to be right on top of the kids.

    1. I agree! I don't sit at my desk during class, but it's nice to have a space to work on my prep period or before/after school!

    2. Also- I LOVE my view. My old room was a view of the parking lot, so this has been a definite upgrade last year and this year!

  6. I love it! I have to have space at the front of the room! I can't stand the feeling of them right on me while I'm teaching. I like your layout. I need to get inspired to get things started!

  7. It looks great! I love the way you separated the different spaces. I try to do that too so I can break up the classroom a bit and make it feel cozier! It looks like you have room for a little bookshelf behind your desk for your binders and such.

Before the School Year Begins...

I decided that before I can start posting about what I'm doing this year, I needed to share some of my favorite strategies from last year that went really well with the students. I was completely inspired by Kelly Gallagher after reading devouring all of his books at the beginning of the school year! I had the opportunity to go to a Kelly Gallagher workshop at Judson this spring, and it was absolutely amazing! He was so nice when I went up to him (I was terrified and starstruck), and even wrote "You're Welcome" on this piece of paper, because my students actually asked me to THANK HIM for changing the way we read novels in class.  Students + asked me + to say thank you to an author + about school stuff = UTOPIA! Here are some of my abbreviated notes from the day: His TOP Points: Kids should write 4X more than you can physically grade  Students suffer from word poverty. Must get students reading more in order to be exposed to vocabulary. We ne

Writing Notebook: Finishing up "Write Ideas" and first Invitation: AAAWWUBBIS!

Happy Monday!! Today I am continuing on with the Writer's Notebook! Last time I left off, students had just finished their "100 Things I Love". After that, students completed their writing territories, which I got from Nancie Atwell's book   Lessons That Change Writers.  We spent the first day discussing writing territories out loud, going through the list in detail, so that students had ideas of what to write about. I told them to think of it like the caption for a picture. One to two sentences that could become something more. Students had to complete this for homework. We also completely numbered our table of contents so that we could add in sections and start working in other parts of the notebook.  Students wrote their writing territories on these pages. Then we moved on to the Writer's Eye (I). Students had to place terms that described them within their "I" or around their "Eye". I created my o
