6 Word Memoirs and Genius Hour Startup!

Today I'm going to talk about two things: 6 Word Memoirs, and Genius Hour

The 6 Word Memoirs today were really fantastic! I checked in the handout I posted for you all yesterday, and then students picked their favorite. They edited as necessary for better words, and wrote them on large index cards.
They look so cool!

I like how unique each of them are, and some are funny while others are very deep.

I had them put their names on the back, and then they picked up their laptop and signed into Edmodo. Once there, they found their next assignment:
Even though students knew who wrote them, they were instructed to NOT write their assignment with the original author in mind. It had to be fiction, so they needed to make up an entirely new character who they could describe based on the 6WM. I can't wait to see what they come up with by Monday. Also, my students are submitting all assignments online this year, even small writing assignments. I am done with the massive amounts of paper from doing in class quick writes, so why not use the computers if I have them checked out?

7th graders finished their 6 word memoir about reading, so I put those up on the bulletin board. They are folded in half to look like...tiny books! :)

It was pouring pretty much all day here, which made my reading corner look really cool and cozy :)

I post my agenda on the back board, but I also have an electronic copy at the front. I saved this as a template, and then I just make a new one every day. It's so great for emergency sub plans, and it's consistent for students.

Today I had a few goals for Genius Hour:

  • Log on to weebly
  • Create a webpage title
  • Create a sub page for a blog
  • Name the blog
  • Fill in the about the author section
  • Write first blog post: I chose to take Genius Hour because...
  • Name subdomain and publish
My suggestion is to create a student account, I always name mine Sally Student, and walk them through the process. Other than some of the computers not wanting to log on, everything went quite smoothly! I'm hoping by the end of next week we can get to the brainstorming process for their project!

  1. I love your "write about reading" activity! I might steal it and use it with my 6th graders. I also love the 6 word memoirs. I used to do those when I taught 7th honors...sigh, they would not be interesting if you ask fresh 6th grade students....maybe in May.

By the way- please tell me, how do you make your letters? They are so pretty! (working on my room next week)

    Thanks!

  6. The present startups need to fabricate esteem in a supportable market or fizzle, actually like some other business. In any case, a startup that is something besides an independent exertion varies strikingly from a customary private venture. Why? Not on the grounds that the actual undertaking has any unique objective other than that of building long haul and maintainable worth but since of how its authors see their momentary objectives in the endeavor. Before the School Year Begins...

I decided that before I can start posting about what I'm doing this year, I needed to share some of my favorite strategies from last year that went really well with the students. I was completely inspired by Kelly Gallagher after reading devouring all of his books at the beginning of the school year! I had the opportunity to go to a Kelly Gallagher workshop at Judson this spring, and it was absolutely amazing! He was so nice when I went up to him (I was terrified and starstruck), and even wrote "You're Welcome" on this piece of paper, because my students actually asked me to THANK HIM for changing the way we read novels in class.  Students + asked me + to say thank you to an author + about school stuff = UTOPIA! Here are some of my abbreviated notes from the day: His TOP Points: Kids should write 4X more than you can physically grade  Students suffer from word poverty. Must get students reading more in order to be exposed to vocabulary. We ne

Writing Notebook: Finishing up "Write Ideas" and first Invitation: AAAWWUBBIS!

Happy Monday!! Today I am continuing on with the Writer's Notebook! Last time I left off, students had just finished their "100 Things I Love". After that, students completed their writing territories, which I got from Nancie Atwell's book   Lessons That Change Writers.  We spent the first day discussing writing territories out loud, going through the list in detail, so that students had ideas of what to write about. I told them to think of it like the caption for a picture. One to two sentences that could become something more. Students had to complete this for homework. We also completely numbered our table of contents so that we could add in sections and start working in other parts of the notebook.  Students wrote their writing territories on these pages. Then we moved on to the Writer's Eye (I). Students had to place terms that described them within their "I" or around their "Eye". I created my o
