5 Beauty Essentials

I don't know about you guys...but I don't particularly like getting up in the morning and primping and prepping for work. It's not that I don't want to look good, but my ridiculous hair unfortunately takes up most of my time!

I always get ready as if I'm doing a quick costume change for a show. In "9 to 5" this summer, we literally had about 45 seconds to change into an outfit before walking back onstage to sing and dance...actually, almost all of our changes were crazy, so I always look like a tornado getting ready in the morning.

I have a lot too much makeup, but if someone told me I could only have five beauty items it would be these:
1. Naked 3 Palette- Ummm, do you have this yet?? It's amazing!! My favorite is the second in from the left. I think it's called Lush, but I've used it so much that I've worn it off. I love that these all blend together really well!

2. Benefit Sugarbomb Blush- Yep, it's expensive, but it also lasts a very long time! This is such a pretty pink color that isn't too overpowering.

3. Almay Liquid Liner in Precise Black- Love. I can't leave the house without my cat-eye. It's definitely my trademark makeup look. I've tried expensive ones, and I keep going back to this!

4. Clarisonic Mia 2- Notice how I don't have foundation on this list? I thank my Clarisonic. The hubster bought this for me for Christmas last year, and I don't know how I lived without it! My skin broke out for awhile after starting, and then it was totally clear. I use it with the Bliss Fabulous Foaming Face Wash. My skin is a combination. One day it is dry, the next oily. Now with this it's pretty smooth and not flaky at all. I love it!!

5. Cover Girl Bombshell Curvacious Mascara in Very Black- I've seen some of creepy reviews about this mascara (taking your eyelashes off, yikes!) but I've never had an issue with it. I only apply one coat, and it doesn't clump. It really does add length, and my only warning is to NEVER put on the #2 by itself. It will harden your lashes. I usually only put the #1 on and it's all I need.

What are your 5 essentials??

  2. I'm glad to know that I'm not the only who dreads primping in the morning. My hair takes forever to finish and by the time I'm finished drying and straightening I'm sweating my butt off and need another shower. I just read some make-up reviews that were promoting the use of a primer. I've purchased one and have been using it this week. I love it. I do wear foundation during the school year and the primer really smoothed it out and helps it stay on even in my hot classroom.

  3. Clinque Mascara, Supergoop face lotion, liquid eye liner, BB cream, and neutral eye shadow. Thanks for sharing!

Before the School Year Begins...

I decided that before I can start posting about what I'm doing this year, I needed to share some of my favorite strategies from last year that went really well with the students. I was completely inspired by Kelly Gallagher after reading devouring all of his books at the beginning of the school year! I had the opportunity to go to a Kelly Gallagher workshop at Judson this spring, and it was absolutely amazing! He was so nice when I went up to him (I was terrified and starstruck), and even wrote "You're Welcome" on this piece of paper, because my students actually asked me to THANK HIM for changing the way we read novels in class.  Students + asked me + to say thank you to an author + about school stuff = UTOPIA! Here are some of my abbreviated notes from the day: His TOP Points: Kids should write 4X more than you can physically grade  Students suffer from word poverty. Must get students reading more in order to be exposed to vocabulary. We ne

Writing Notebook: Finishing up "Write Ideas" and first Invitation: AAAWWUBBIS!

Happy Monday!! Today I am continuing on with the Writer's Notebook! Last time I left off, students had just finished their "100 Things I Love". After that, students completed their writing territories, which I got from Nancie Atwell's book   Lessons That Change Writers.  We spent the first day discussing writing territories out loud, going through the list in detail, so that students had ideas of what to write about. I told them to think of it like the caption for a picture. One to two sentences that could become something more. Students had to complete this for homework. We also completely numbered our table of contents so that we could add in sections and start working in other parts of the notebook.  Students wrote their writing territories on these pages. Then we moved on to the Writer's Eye (I). Students had to place terms that described them within their "I" or around their "Eye". I created my o
