Goal Setting Link Up with I {Heart} Recess!

I {Heart} Recess

I'm linking up with I {Heart} Recess for the Goals: Back To School Edition Linky!

Personal: Since my husband is an AP, and I have a lot of extra duties at school, we often feel like ships passing in the night. He is exhausted when he gets home, and I'm usually already on the couch, working away on my Macbook. I need to make sure that when he is home, we are spending quality time together, not just half-listening or watching something. I prefer to leave work as soon as I can because I am more comfortable at home working in pj pants, but I have to learn how to draw the line between required work at home, and obsessive projects.

Organization: I consider myself a pretty organized person, but I can definitely let my meticulous systems fall by the wayside in favor of a pile of papers that I have mentally marked, "Later". Sometimes, later turns in to the spring, and that was a huge problem this year. I moved rooms, so I was able to purge so much stuff, and it felt absolutely amazing to leave my new room last spring and know where everything was. I even took pictures so I wouldn't panic over break. (I know, I have issues.)

Planning: I plan well in advance, and I have to not let days I'm out for meetings or special assembly days completely throw me off. Basically, I feel like I need to plan a little less, because if something goes wrong, it can throw off my entire quarter when I plan it out like that. I went to a conference where they talked about a "bubble week" that would allow for some breathing room in the curriculum. This is definitely something I need to keep in mind.

Professional: I tend to get caught up in groups, especially when it's a bonding situation, like irritation over something. This may come from the fact that I never had a "group" I completely identified with growing up, and I'm still searching for that kind of acceptance, I don't know. Anyway, I want to try, to the best of my ability, and it probably won't happen honestly, to not let bad situations or negativity affect me at school.

Students: Last year I promised myself NO POWER STRUGGLES. I did it. It was a great year because of it. It made my classroom a better place, and it gave me more control over situations. Obviously I will continue to do that, but now I need to make sure that each student I meet knows I care about him/her. I read the article Why I Hated Meredith's First Grade Teacher and after crying, I was completely excited to meet my new students for the first time, and see my students I'm looping with again. I always call them "my" students, so I need to make sure they know that they are mine, and that I care deeply about their well-being and education!

Motto: So simple, "How can I help you succeed?" I want students to OWN their learning this year, and be able to explain to me what they need in order to learn best! :)

Before the School Year Begins...

I decided that before I can start posting about what I'm doing this year, I needed to share some of my favorite strategies from last year that went really well with the students. I was completely inspired by Kelly Gallagher after reading devouring all of his books at the beginning of the school year! I had the opportunity to go to a Kelly Gallagher workshop at Judson this spring, and it was absolutely amazing! He was so nice when I went up to him (I was terrified and starstruck), and even wrote "You're Welcome" on this piece of paper, because my students actually asked me to THANK HIM for changing the way we read novels in class.  Students + asked me + to say thank you to an author + about school stuff = UTOPIA! Here are some of my abbreviated notes from the day: His TOP Points: Kids should write 4X more than you can physically grade  Students suffer from word poverty. Must get students reading more in order to be exposed to vocabulary. We ne

Writing Notebook: Finishing up "Write Ideas" and first Invitation: AAAWWUBBIS!

Happy Monday!! Today I am continuing on with the Writer's Notebook! Last time I left off, students had just finished their "100 Things I Love". After that, students completed their writing territories, which I got from Nancie Atwell's book   Lessons That Change Writers.  We spent the first day discussing writing territories out loud, going through the list in detail, so that students had ideas of what to write about. I told them to think of it like the caption for a picture. One to two sentences that could become something more. Students had to complete this for homework. We also completely numbered our table of contents so that we could add in sections and start working in other parts of the notebook.  Students wrote their writing territories on these pages. Then we moved on to the Writer's Eye (I). Students had to place terms that described them within their "I" or around their "Eye". I created my o
