Classroom In Progress: Pinterest Bench- Monday Made It!

My Pinterest inspired bench and my first Monday Made It!

I made this Monday I promise! I just got totally busy last night and couldn't post :(

I have been drooling over these benches on Pinterest for awhile, and you can find this type of bench all over the place, but my go to tutorial was at Grade 2 Happenings !
Foam from Jo-Ann (I don't usually shop there because it's expensive, but I had a coupon!)

Adorable owl from Pier 1, I was in LOVE just like in the commercials I felt like he was talking to me.
I picked up the great chevron fabric at Hobby Lobby!

Shelf board from Lowe's, 15 X 48

Milk crates from The Container Store. It was HIGHLY recommended to use REAL milk crates, and these are very sturdy, not like the ones you can buy at Walmart/Target/Etc... $6.99 each

Zip Tied together *I knew that huge box of zip ties I bought would come in handy one day!

I stapled the fabric over the foam onto the board. I had to go out and get a heavy duty staple gun, my wimpy lightweight one wouldn't cut it!

Fabric bins from Target, and yes, that is Skippy Jon Jones chillin' with the owl. I got him at Kohl's :) I may teach middle school, but no one can resist the cuteness of him!

Can I confess something? The amount of money I ended up spending on the crates, foam, and board, was almost equal to a really cute bench I saw at Target by Cubeicals.

However, I had so much fun making it I don't care :) Enjoy!

    1. I love the owls on your blog. The bench is so cute too with the target baskets underneath. I was thinking of making the crate seats I have been seeing, but I like the bench idea more. Thanks for sharing. :)

  3. Jen,

I love it! I think it will be my next make it Monday. I have extra milk crates laying around and some foam. So now I just need to go get a board and some fabric and I will put my magic to work. This was seriously just the inspiration I needed!

  4. I really like this version better than the individual cube seats...... I thinking about doing this as a listening center and not doing the cushion on the top board...just cute material or contact paper (gotta be cute!). thanks for sharing.

Before the School Year Begins...

I decided that before I can start posting about what I'm doing this year, I needed to share some of my favorite strategies from last year that went really well with the students. I was completely inspired by Kelly Gallagher after reading devouring all of his books at the beginning of the school year! I had the opportunity to go to a Kelly Gallagher workshop at Judson this spring, and it was absolutely amazing! He was so nice when I went up to him (I was terrified and starstruck), and even wrote "You're Welcome" on this piece of paper, because my students actually asked me to THANK HIM for changing the way we read novels in class.  Students + asked me + to say thank you to an author + about school stuff = UTOPIA! Here are some of my abbreviated notes from the day: His TOP Points: Kids should write 4X more than you can physically grade  Students suffer from word poverty. Must get students reading more in order to be exposed to vocabulary. We ne

Writing Notebook: Finishing up "Write Ideas" and first Invitation: AAAWWUBBIS!

Happy Monday!! Today I am continuing on with the Writer's Notebook! Last time I left off, students had just finished their "100 Things I Love". After that, students completed their writing territories, which I got from Nancie Atwell's book   Lessons That Change Writers.  We spent the first day discussing writing territories out loud, going through the list in detail, so that students had ideas of what to write about. I told them to think of it like the caption for a picture. One to two sentences that could become something more. Students had to complete this for homework. We also completely numbered our table of contents so that we could add in sections and start working in other parts of the notebook.  Students wrote their writing territories on these pages. Then we moved on to the Writer's Eye (I). Students had to place terms that described them within their "I" or around their "Eye". I created my o
